MD Euan Safey

We are proud to announce the appointment of Euan Safey as our new Musical Director. Euan,a young New Zealand-born conductor, pianist and teacher, and is a passionate collaborative musician.

Having completed a Bachelor of Music with first class Honours in Piano Performance at the University of Waikato under Katherin Austin, Euan spent two years as a New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) Conducting Fellow under Hamish McKeitch and James Judd. Euan has also studied under notable Kiwi conductors Kenneth Young, Peter Walls, Michael Joel, and Peter Adams, and received tutelage from NZSO Principal conductor Gemma New and international guest conductors Miguel Harth-Bedoya, André de Ridder, Mark Wigglesworth and Alice Farnham. He is currently studying conducting with Dr Luke Dollman at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and has been accepted into the Australian Conducting Academy in 2025.

Euan’s conducting engagements have included positions and performances with Opus Orchestra, NZSO National Youth Orchestra, Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Wind Orchestra, Adelaide Summer Orchestra, St Matthews Chamber Orchestra, Bay of Plenty Symphonia, Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Youth Orchestra Waikato and the University of Waikato Orchestra, along with several smaller community ensembles. He also conducted the University of Waikato’s productions of Puccini’s opera Gianni Schicchi in 2022/2023.

As a pianist, Euan is a versatile collaborator, performer, orchestral player and teacher, and was recently Assistant Chorus Master and rehearsal pianist with State Opera South Australia.

Most of our music is a cappella for Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass (SATB) choir. We draw largely from renaissance and medieval music and gospel. You may download songs recorded by Voices in the Wilderness from our Recordings web-page. Please note that practice recordings and sheet music are no longer accessible to the public.

9.30 to 11.30am Friday mornings during school terms at St Johns in the Wilderness Anglican church, 379 Halifax St, Adelaide, followed by a non obligatory coffee afterwards at a nearby cafe.

We often perform at St John's in Halifax Street Adelaide, and at a few other locations. We are definitely worth coming to see because we all love singing, we sound great, and... we are charming and fun and generous!

What to Wear -
We have no uniform, but wear any combination of black, with a splash of colour for performing, Flair and sartorial finesse are welcome!. A black folder is required for sheet music.

When to Arrive -

Unless otherwise negotiated, we arrive for performances half an hour early to warm up.

Performance Standard -

We want everyone in the choir to feel welcome to perform, and we want our performances to be a proud celebration of the work we have done, to share with our audience. Of course choristers who haven't been to rehearsals leading up to a performance may not be secure. Please have a chat with the musical director if you are in this situation.

Choir Subs.

Choir subscriptions are used to pay our Musical Director, Euan Safey, and our accompanist Emma. The subs are $80 per term. All appreciate the enormous benefit an accompanist brings. Subs are due at the beginning of each term, and members are asked to pay their account online. Our treasurer (The lovely Ela!) may offer alternative payment options to those with no internet access.
